Job Title: Import Officer

Location: Ikeja, Lagos
Employment Type: Full-time

Job Summary

  • We are seeking a knowledgeable and detail-oriented Import Officer to oversee and manage import operations from documentation through clearance to final delivery.
  • The ideal candidate will ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines, cost efficiency, and seamless coordination with internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Manage end-to-end import processes, including receipt and follow-up on Bill of Lading (BL) and other critical documents.
  • Coordinate with shipping lines, clearing agents, and customs officials to ensure the timely clearance of consignments.
  • Handle air and sea freight documentation and clearance procedures.
  • Track and reconcile import-related expenses, including container deposits and demurrage charges.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date shipment and import records using Excel and internal systems.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to optimize import processes and reduce costs.
  • Communicate effectively with all relevant parties to ensure smooth operations and compliance.
  • Prepare reports on import activities, costs, and compliance for management review.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory and statutory guidelines related to imports.
  • Collaborate closely with internal and external stakeholders to maintain transparency, openness, and efficiency in the procurement and import process.
  • Provide timely updates on shipment status and resolution of any issues.
  • Monitor key performance indicators such as cost reduction and avoidance, demurrage rates, and container deposit returns.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Engineering, Management, Economics, or a related discipline.
  • Membership in relevant professional bodies is an advantage.
  • Minimum of 4 years cognate experience in a similar import role.

Competencies Required:

  • Strong knowledge of import clearance procedures, including M-form processing and Nigerian Customs regulations.
  • Excellent communication, coordination, and problem-solving skills.
  • High level of integrity, transparency, and commitment to compliance.
  • Basic accounting skills, especially in cost reconciliation and expense tracking.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other relevant software.
